When can I start?
A. You need to be 17 and have a valid provisional
licence. Complete a D1 form from the Post Office and
send it to the DVLA with your passport or birth
certificate and a passport-sized photo as ID. You can
also apply for your provisional license online. When
applying online you may still be required to send
additional documentation if you do not meet all the
online criteria. Apply for it up to three months
before your 17th birthday and you could book your first
lesson for the big day!
A. Driving Standards Agency research shows
that the current average is 45 hours of tuition, with an additional 22
hours private practice to pass. I will give you an idea of how long you
are likely to need after your first lesson. You can help keep this low
by taking two-hour lessons and following our easy tips for practice with
parents or relatives.
A. In your actual driving theory test, you will be assessed
on your driving attitude, traffic signs and regulations, safety in
vehicles and how the environment affects driving conditions, plus
the effects of alcohol, drugs and fatigue on drivers. The DSA theory
test is split into two sections:
- 50 multiple choice questions
From a bank of 1000 to test your road safety knowledge in 45
minutes. You must get 43 out of the 50 to pass.
- 14 video clips
To test your hazard perception skills. You will use a mouse to
indicate when you spot a potential hazard. The quicker you are,
the higher your score.
You will need pass both of these before you can take your
practical test. If you fail either section, you will need to retake
the whole test again.
A. Firstly the eyesight test in which you have to be able to
read a number plate at a distance of 20.5 metres (or 67feet)
Then you will be asked 2 "Show Me Tell Me" questions form a list of
13 questions on basic car safety and maintenance items.
The main part of the test lasts about 35 minutes and tests your
ability to drive safely and competently in accordance with the Highway
Code. This will include at least 2 reversing manoeuvres and possibly an
emergency stop. To pass you must not incur more than 15 driver errors, 1
serious or 1 dangerous error.
A. Yes. When you have demonstrated your driving ability is to
test standard you may take your test in my car. This is normally a 2
hour lesson with the second hour being the test. The first hour is to
settle your nerves and practice any last minute manoeuvres.
A. All tuition follows the DSA approved syllabus which covers
the key skills you will be expected to attain to drive safely and
competently. A written Driver's Record will chart your progress in
18 different areas and you must be able to handle each area
independently before you are considered ready for your practical
test. Each session begins with a recap of the previous lesson, the
subject for today's lesson, the object of the lesson, the main
points that will be covered, practice and then a summary at the end.
